A
couple years ago we decided
we’d spend every day writing
and recording music.
We had no parameters and imposed
no limitations on the project.
Our only goal was to combine
diverse styles, instrumentation/sound
sources to create a varied yet
inified body of work. In this
way every song has its own story
and different textural and structural
design. Some songs began as
simple acoustic guitar melodies
that we heaped layers upon.
Some began as chunks of noise
or sound experiments which were
given form via editing and digital
manipulation. We used everything
we could find.
We snuck into
churches to use pianos, “borrowed”
instruments from friends, amplified
things that are not meant to
be amplified and scanned the
library for interesting sound
clips. In the end we were able
to channel our neurotic creative
drive and existential alienation
through guitars, bass, synths,
software, piano, kamilba, flute,
xylophone, field recordings,
samples, voice, tape noise,
effects pedals, and ultimately
digital editing. After a few
months Mitch came back and took
the songs we had made and embellished/remixed/redirected
them as he saw fit. Upon returning
to school, the final mixes were
sent to each other electronically
until we agreed that they were
complete. So here we are, all
still under 20 years old with
a mass of recorded music on
our hands. The first of which
is now being issued by The Arena
Rock Recording Company. |
